The punching is the process of giving a sign, or a form, on a surface by pressure or percussion with a tool with steel punch (from the Latin "punctio", prick).

For the punching process is used an automatic machines (punch press) to cut and pierce the sheet metal (aluminum or steel) of up to 25-30mm thick to create precision metal parts. With numerical control (CNC) punch presses can be made cutting and shaping metal parts very complex, quickly and safely. Until publication of oxyfuel systems, in the early eighties, punch presses were the only practical way to cut and process sheets with thicker more than 2.3 mm.

Basic Concepts of Metal Stamping

The metal punching process conducted at GMP involves a stamping die; this is a precision tool that cuts sheet metal and forms desired shapes and profiles. Our die forming and cutting selection is made of tool steel, this is special hardened steel. We also possess dies that contain forming and cutting sections made from other hard and wear resistant materials.

Since stamping is a cold-forming process, we do not use heat in our metal punching process. We have a variety of metal punching units and this enables us to manufacture small and large materials. We develop large materials, for example; automobile parts.

Through our metal punching process, we can produce holes of different shapes and sizes. This enables us to produce different parts for various applications and to meet the unique needs of our clients. We only hire the most experienced metal punching process personnel to maintain our high-quality standards.

Punching and blanking refer to the use of a die to cut the material into specific forms. In punching operations, a scrap piece of material is removed as the punch enters the die, effectively leaving a hole in the workpiece. Blanking, on the other hand, removes a workpiece from the primary material, making that removed component the desired workpiece or blank.

Material Considerations

The choice of metal stamping materials used depends on the desired attributes of the finished piece. Stamping is not limited as a fabrication process to just metals - there are numerous metal stamping materials that can be processed through stamping techniques, such as paper, leather, or rubber, but metals are by far the most commonly used.

In general, metals tend to maintain their malleability and ductility after stamping. Those used in precision stamping usually range from soft to medium hardness and carry a low coefficient of flow. Some of the customary metals and metal types fabricated through stamping include:

  • Precious metals, such as silver, gold, and platinum
  • Ferrous metals, especially iron-based alloys like stainless steel
  • Non-ferrous metals, such as bronze, brass, and zinc
  • Non-standard alloys, such as beryllium nickel and beryllium copper

Ferrous metals are commonly used in stamping operations, as their low carbon content means they are among the least expensive options available resulting in low unit production costs.

Several important factors and design considerations need to be addressed when performing metal stamping operations.

Equipment & Capabilities

Our state-of-the-art facility is equipped with advanced 4-axis CNC machining capabilities that allow us to achieve tolerances up to ±.001”. Geared towards heavy industry, we can accommodate the machining of large scale components such as boring up to 7’, turning up to 98” in diameter and 160” in length, milling up to 84” in length, 54” in diameter, with a lifting capacity of up to 15 tons.

From gear hobbing to gun drilling and broaching, we can provide virtually any machining operation on materials such as carbon, stainless, and alloy steel, aluminum, nickel, exotic metals, and plastics. In addition, we also provide heat-treating; welding by AWS certified welders, various coatings, and non-destructive testing.
